Reactive SPS for sol–gel alumina samples: Structure, sintering behavior, and mechanical properties

This work presents a fast and direct controlled routine for the fabrication of fully dense alumina based on reactive spark plasma sintering (reactive-SPS) boehmite (γ-AlOOH) nano-powders obtained by sol–gel technique. The evolution transition aluminas during has been studied. Some powders were seeded with α-Al2O3 particles prior to gelation. Boehmite exhibited at 1070 °C, enhancing transformation kinetics lowering required temperature more than 100 °C. For comparison, other samples prepared previously annealing unseeded powders. Thus, sintered standard-SPS. A detailed structural mechanical characterization is presented, comparing hardness indentation fracture resistance different grain sizes porosities. Both reactive-SPSed standard-SPSed showed high (18–20 GPa), whereas lower due large size (∼10 μm). Improvements this procedure obtaining smaller are discussed. In summary, presented technique brings revolutionary method alumina, as process reduces time densification.
